Rationale
We chose to do an animation that explored environmental issues. We chose the beach setting over a market setting as we felt it gave a stronger basis for sustainability. In our animation we chose to use an hourglass as a symbol for sustainability and balance, wherein one half is a peaceful beach and the other is a busy urban city. We wanted to reflect on the rapid industrialization of beaches using Oriental bay as an example in mind. The hourglass depicts our impact on the environment over time as we struggle to maintain the balance of man-made and natural settings.
We wanted to show that it was possible for both to co-exist as long as balance and moderation was applied. This is shown through our use of mainly symmetrical (hourglass) and asymmetrical design elements. We also decided to keep both areas within the same color palette range to emphasize balance and not create direct contrast. This was to avoid antagonizing one area from the other, creating a more neutral composition.
